New Lothian Buses app from Corethree aims to drive passenger number increase

Lothian Buses, the UK’s largest publicly-owned bus company, is looking to a new mobile ticketing app to help drive higher passenger numbers.

The free app, developed by digital commerce specialists Corethree and available for Apple and Android smartphones, is the first of its kind in Scotland for public transport. Through the app, users will be able to prepay for tickets, which will then appear on their phone and can be shown to the driver on boarding.

In conjunction with a data-driven companion app, passengers are also offered a range of personalised options for departures, journey planning and service updates, with innovations such as a 'stop alert' for passengers unfamiliar with a route.

Ian Craig, Chief Executive of Lothian Buses, commented

"We haven't set ourselves specific targets for an increase in passenger journeys with this new app, but what is clear is that this is the type of innovation both existing and potential customers expect to see from transport providers. We have worked closely with Corethree to develop a high-quality bespoke product and are already working with them on an updated version that offers even more functionality and helps to keep us at the forefront of ticketing and digital innovation in the passenger transport sector."

The main features of the Lothian Buses app include:

  • Advance purchase of SINGLEtickets, DAYtickets, DAY&NIGHTtickets and NIGHTtickets in any combination, to a minimum value of £10 and valid for 90 days
  • Tickets are downloaded onto the user's phone, ready for 'activation' and shown to the driver when boarding. SINGLEtickets are only valid for 5 minutes once activated, so should be activated immediately prior to boarding.
  • Live departure information, journey planners and service updates that can be customised by the user.

The app, which is cloud-based and can be updated instantly, will allow greater commercial creativity in future. The aim is to provide a more dynamic range of ticketing products than is available through the use of traditional ticketing media.

The app has been developed by Corethree and incorporates special activation business rules and a unique anti-fraud security code.

Richard Stevenson, Product Specialist at Corethree said,

"Our mobile ticketing solution is a great "real life" example of how mobile technology can help improve every day tasks. Using the new Lothian Bus mobile app, passengers now no longer need to find the right change or worry about queuing at ticket machines when purchasing a ticket. Passengers can simply buy a ticket using Corethree's award-winning mobile wallet, whilst on the move."

Last year Lothian Buses carried 111m passengers across 70 services, generating over £122m revenue.

The app launch is Corethree's third deployment of November, following the rollout of Metrobus and Transdev Lancashire earlier in the month.
